Some people know where Whiritoa is, and some people don’t know.
So for those who don’t know, Whiritoa is the first beach on the south eastern side of New Zealand’s Coromandel Peninsula, situated between Waihi and Whangamata. It’s a pleasant two hour drive from Auckland, with the most direct route through Ngatea, Paeroa and the Karangahake Gorge.
We bought our Whiritoa beach house at summer’s end in 2002. It was kind of love at first sight. It’s a small community with a surf club, a shop (that serves expresso coffee), a tennis court, library, fire brigade and community centre. It’s a 15 to 20 minute drive from Waihi and about 12 minutes to Whangamata. Whangamata is known for it’s beach, river, marina and the annual Beach Hop.
The purpose of this site is to share photos taken throughout our time at Whiritoa.
Our house is listed for rent on New Zealand Holiday Homes.
